Smart Speech Therapy wrote a fantastic post titled Dear Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician: Please Don’t Do That! I thought this post was so important that I needed to share it all with you! Please click on the link above to read the original post. Basically, this post explains the (very annoying) tendency of some doctors who provide parents with a speech and language diagnosis and recommendation for treatment. Guess what people. DOCTORS ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO DO THIS. They are not Speech-Language Pathologists and do not have the specified training required to diagnose a child with a speech or language disorder. Doctors ARE qualified to review developmental milestones and REFER children for speech evaluations by a certified Speech-Language Pathologist, who will then performed a comprehensive speech and language evaluation.
I have received several calls like this in the past, and I know I will continue to receive calls like this in the future. It’s the nature of the beast, but maybe, eventually, we SLPs will get the word out and this kind of over-reach by doctors will cease. So, if you’re a doctor, DON’T DO THIS! If you’re a parent, please realize that your doctor can only refer, not diagnose, a speech language disorder.
Until next time,
